Annual Meeting 2011: Measuring Geographical Mobility in Regional Labour Market Monitoring Approaches

Even though geographical mobility is relevant for regions and localities, the regional dimension does often not feature in the discourses on geographical mobility. Therefore, the Annual Meeting of the EN RLMM addressed the issue of measuring geographical mobility from the perspective of regional and local labour market monitoring. This concerns out-migration, which takes place in many rural regions in Europe and has a strong impact on regional labour markets, but also on the social systems and the composition of the age structure of the local population. Furthermore, border-regions are confronted with the phenomenon of out- and in-communting, leading to changes in the dynamics of the regional and local labour markets. To develop adequate measures for convincing people to stay in regions or to move to specific localities, it requires transparency on the mobility behaviour of different age and gender groups, sets of professions and persons with different levels of qualification. Such transparency can be provided by regional labour market monitoring.
